Will Mojave 10.14.5 permit booting from an external Raid 1 HD?

Well, I do backup and have backup drives. What I wanted was to be able to boot from a Raid1 drive so that I might install an updated application on that drive before booting. Then, when I booted, I could test whether or not that update would work with the new Mac OS software update. I can boot in this way using Mac OS Sierra. If I can do this with Sierra, why can I not do this with Mojave?
Additionally, I have not gone up to the newer software because DiskWarrior has not yet been revised so that it can repair APFS disks. I do have an SSD in my Macintosh Pro, so I wanted that ability to at least repair the disk catalog. Alsoft says they now have specs from Apple, but there's no telling when Alsoft will come out with a new DW version.
